Day 1: Arrival in Balestrand and check-in at Kviknes Hotel
The road trip begins in beautiful Balestrand, idyllically located in the heart of the Sognefjord. Here, you check in at the majestic Kviknes Hotel.
The Kvikne family has been hosting since the hotel was built in Swiss style in 1877, and despite both renovations and extensions, the hotel by the fjord has managed to retain its unique character. Kviknes Hotel is now a modern hotel with soul and atmosphere, and both artworks and treasures collected over generations contribute to giving the hotel its special style.
Here you can visit the Norwegian Travel Museum in Balestrand, which opened in 2016, and stroll over to the Cider House, where in the summer you can partake in cider tasting and shop in the farm shop. The Cider House has its own shop with about 20 different types of Balholm cider and fruit juice.
Balestrand also has a good, varied, and well-marked trail network where most will find a suitable option. Some of the trails have information posts where you can read about the nature and animals that live in the area. The trails are also well-equipped with viewpoints, benches, and fire pits. Many are accessible from Balestrand’s center.
And after the hike? Then relax in peaceful surroundings on the terrace or in one of the hotel’s lounges. In the evening, enjoy a good dinner in the splendid dining room. You will surely find something good to drink as the hotel’s wine list is the largest and most content-rich in the Sognefjord.
Day 2: From Sognefjord to Geirangerfjord
Start the day with a good breakfast at Kviknes Hotel. Did you know that our hotels are checked every year on over 550 points in our quality standard? Of these, 130 points are solely about the hotel's breakfast, so it’s easy to start the day on the right foot at our hotels.
After breakfast, you are ready to get in the car and head towards Geirangerfjord. The drive is estimated to take around 6 hours and offers spectacular nature and several well-known landmarks along the way from fjord to fjord. If you're traveling between May and November, we recommend you drive along the National Tourist Route Gaularfjellet, which starts just outside the door of Kviknes Hotel. See current driving routes on Google Maps.
As you arrive in Hellesylt, you board the ferry operated by the renowned The Fjords. The ferry takes both you and your car on a spectacular fjord cruise from Hellesylt to Geiranger, lasting about an hour and providing views of mountains, famous waterfalls, and old mountain farms. In this package, we have included one car and up to five people per booking. If you need more cars or additional people, you can book those directly here.
As you drive off the ferry in Geiranger, the road naturally leads you higher up to the magnificent Hotel Union Geiranger.
This hotel was built as early as 1891 but has since been expanded, with a modern conference and event area, swimming pool, new top floor with 13 suites, vintage car exhibit, nightclub, spa area, and constantly new offerings both inside and out. The strong Union atmosphere of quality and service over generations is still preserved and carried forward by today’s hosts.
The unique natural surroundings of Geirangerfjord were created through a series of ice ages, as glaciers carved out deep fjords between the high mountains. This natural beauty has ensured that the area consistently appears on lists of the most spectacular places in the world. Impressive waterfalls, such as the famous waterfalls The Seven Sisters, The Suitor, and The Bridal Veil, plunge into the fjord, enveloped in a wispy mist.
After checking in at Hotel Union Geiranger, it’s nice to take a stroll in the small center consisting of boathouses and old wooden houses. Stop by the various small outlets and taste Geiranger's own chocolate or other local products. When dinner time comes, the hotel has set up a unique buffet that is known throughout the region.
Last day: New adventures await
After a final breakfast at Hotel Union Geiranger, you find yourself in the middle of several exciting destinations. Drive north to experience urban Ålesund, home to the historic Brosundet, or set your course east towards Innlandet with its unique flavors. What are you waiting for? Norway is waiting!
Feel free to stay additional nights at Hotel Union Geiranger. All nights booked beyond the second night will be added to the booking at Hotel Union Geiranger.
