Activities in Geiranger
Summer is high season along the Geirangerfjord – and for good reason. The waterfalls thunder down into deep blue water, the trails are open from the shoreline to the mountain peaks, and daylight lasts almost through the night. It is no coincidence that the world has been coming here since the first cruise ship sailed into the fjord in 1869 – and no coincidence that UNESCO chose to protect it.
Hike to Skageflå – the mountain farm that clings 250 metres above the water – or make your way up to the Eagle's Bend viewpoint, which gave its name to the hotel's signature cocktail. For those who want to get even closer, kayaking or fjord sightseeing by boat is an experience unlike any other. If you're after a bigger thrill, via ferrata and zip-lining in Geiranger Nature Park is a natural choice.
Back at the hotel, something equally unique awaits: the vintage car museum, where many of the open seven-seaters used to show tourists around Geiranger in the 1920s and 30s are still in fine condition – and free to visit for hotel guests.
Things to do in Geiranger:

Food & Drink
At Hotel Union, a meal is never just a meal. It is where the day takes shape – whether you start it with fresh bread and fjord views, share a long lunch in the summer sun on the Queen's Terrace, or end the evening at the pastry chefs' dessert table after the Union Buffet. The food is good, the views are always there, and the ingredients are chosen with care.
Throughout the day, you have a wide range of dining options to choose from – from a relaxed café by the pool to à la carte and buffet dining in the evening. Whatever mood you are in, you will find something to match it here.
Breakfast
Restaurant Fjorden serves a breakfast buffet every morning – hot and cold dishes, fresh bread and pastries, local ingredients, and everything you need to head out on a hike. Prefer a slower start? Breakfast can be ordered and served directly to your room, or you can enjoy the spa breakfast served from 09:00 to 12:00 – included for all guests with access to Union Spa.
Lunch
Restaurant Julie – named after Julie Mjelva, the first of the family to run the hotel – serves lunch from 12:00 to 17:00 with a varied selection of salads, sandwiches, pizza, burgers, and hot dishes. Café Løsta on the 3rd floor, right by the pool area, offers lighter lunch options and refreshments in a more informal setting. On fine days, the garden is a wonderful place to sit. This summer, you can also enjoy lunch outdoors on the Queen's Terrace – the hotel's large terrace with a direct view over the Geirangerfjord.
Dinner
Every evening from 18:30, we invite you to the Union Buffet at Restaurant Fjorden – a generous spread of hot and cold quality dishes, made from scratch by our chefs using seasonal ingredients. Choose between two sittings: 18:30 or 20:00. The evening rounds off with the pastry chefs' dessert table. If you prefer to dine à la carte, Restaurant Julie is an intimate and welcoming alternative, with starters, main courses, and wines from the hotel's own cellar. And when the evening is warm, the Queen's Terrace is the place to be – dinner outdoors with the fjord as your backdrop.
Union Spa
The spa at Hotel Union is a destination in its own right. The relaxation area offers a place to slow down and gather yourself, while the wet area features a Japanese hot bath, sauna, aroma showers, hydra walk, and foot bath. A full range of rooms and experiences that make it easy to lose track of time – and even easier to find your calm again.
The spa breakfast – served from 09:00 to 12:00 – is included for all guests with access to Union Spa, and makes for a natural start to a full spa day. We recommend booking treatments well in advance, as capacity is limited during peak season.
